1/9/05 - Leap

Gaithersburg, MD

This is a photo from a session I just did at my YMCA. This is Margreta, who is the subject of an earlier PAD. Among the things she teaches is dance, so I asked her to do some "dance stuff". Most of the them were various still poses (which I will try to get posted in Margreta's gallery in the YMCA/staff gallery. She did two leaps like this one, and I actually managed to catch each pretty much at the peak of her arc. In this one, I isolated her from the background (red curtains) and experimented with several substitutes. This one is a relatively light blue with an Gradient (black to white, i.e. completely masked to entirely transparent) adjustment layer. I tried a few alternate gradients, but didn't like them much. I tried this one and its inverse, then decided I wanted the image of her leaping from darkness into light. (Guess I must be in an up mood. :)) I tried some with no gradient, but varying opacity on the color layer, allowing the curtain folds to show through.

Other than that, this is pretty much just a snapshot.

John, I was really lucky with this: I took two shots, and both of them caught her at the top of the arc and in focus. Only her hands were slightly different. Next time I'll have to try with her coming toward me rather than away.

This image is stunning, compression garbage be damned! Margreta looks like a natural model, (most dancers are) and I’d love to see more of her! Do you guys know how HARD it is to get an image like this at the very apex of a jump? GADS! I’d have to re-shoot it a dozen times to get one that I wanted to keep! Good job! Vote!

Yann - I've replace the old photo with a more carefully done version. Unfortunately in any rendering other than Original, those compression artifacts still show. I don't know if it's just the level of compression that pbase does or they didn't regenerate the other version after I uploaded the new photo. When I went back to my original, I realized that this was a pretty severe crop of the original shot, and that getting in too close (as with the pbase Original) is, well, too close. Thanks for pointing out the original problem; I'll be more aware of the potential problem in the future.

Yann, Yep, I see them now - along the primary edges, e.g., arms. I may have overdone the down-rez. I'll do some investigation. Thanks for the comment.

Could have been a cool picture but... why is it so compressed ? There's a lot of disturbing compression artefacts everywhere :-/

Great shot, Dennis! Is there a story behind it? I love your commentaries :)

Very nice flying away - leaping out in the big blue!
Or with a twist: she just saw her love down the street,
or maybe her hat blew off....
