6-26-04d - Merle Cutie

Berryville, VA

Probably have acted as if I had too much time on my hands today. Spent the morning sheepherding and then shooting everything that didn't move for possible PAD shots. Now, I have to make up my mind.

This sweetie was waiting her chance to take after the sheep this morning. One of the things I love about border collies (and Australian shepards) is that they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. That's probably why border collie people really don't like the AKC idea of conformation "standards" -- there ain't no standard border collie. The skinniest, ugliest mongrel (looking) could be the best herder.

I live in Germantown, MD -- about 25 mi. north of downtown Washington, DC. (When I away from home, esp. in a foreign country, I just say Washington, DC -- and then duck.) Unfortunately, I live in a townhouse, so Airlie (the dog) and I have to go out in the countryside if we want to harass some sheep. Actually, we take "lessons" (note the "we") about every two weeks -- been doing it for several years. Airlie, like many border collies, is a bit "pushy", so this is her therapy-cum-reward for making nice. (Pushy? ha! A friend once told me that I'm the only person he knows who actually *lives* with a dominatrix bitch.) Let's just say she's got a dominant agressive streak. Let's also just say that she'd be in puppy heaven if I hadn't adopted her; she was originally owned by a family for her first two years. They had four little kids (humans, not goats) and a cat, none of which Airlie would stop herding. I was told that one day she actually had herded the mom and all four kids into a closet and wouldn't let them out! Anyway, she's a real piece of work.
