Beginning in 2006, I have served as a photographer on a number of medical missions to Africa and Asia, led by Dr. Glenn Geelhoed of George Washington University (Washington, DC). These galleries document those trips. The missions are independent, non-governmental missions made up of medical students, various other medical professionals, and, in these cases, an itinerant photographer (me). All personnel on each mission volunteer their time and pay their own expenses.
Dr. Geelhoed has been conducting these missions (usually with the sponsorship or support of other charitable groups) for many years, helping thousands of people in Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, Asia, and other places -- while at the same time providing medical students with experience, perspective, and understanding they might otherwise miss in their education. For people like me, who have no particular medical experience, these have been the opportunity of a lifetime to document these humanitarian missions, expand my questionable photographic skills, maintain an awareness of the conditions under which so many people in this world must live, and to keep reminding myself how blessed my life has been. I can only hope that my efforts, however small, will help make a difference. I appreciate any commentsand suggestions, technical, artistic, or otherwise regarding the photos.
