In June 2007, we set off to the Baviaanskloof wilderness area to give the Isuzu it's first off-road experience since Helena was born. Our first stop was at a farm just outside of Oudtshoorn - Rolbaken - for 2 nights. We had very gracious hosts, Dick and Mary Carr who looked after our every need and Mary's great cooking increased my weight by at least 2 kg's.
From there we drove to the Baviaans area and rested at Zandvlakte for 3 days. The old farmhouse is called Rooikloof - the rockface on the photo speaks for itself. It does not have electricity which is very romantic unless you have a 6 month old who thinks she missed out on supper and a bath as soon as the sun sets at 17h00 and for some reason does not see 3 candles as sufficient light. It got very cold in the nights and we did not get up early.
From here we explored the Baviaans wilderness area. I was on my bicycle until I saw the "Beware Buffalo" sign. I got back in the Isuzu very quickly!
We drove over three very scary mountain passes with only a single vehicle width between the cliff face and dropoff and over rocks that you need a 4x4 or at least a vehicle with sufficient ground clearance. Once through, we stayed at a citrus farm at a place called Kudu Kaja. Very nice! Our host even gave us some export oranges for the road. Off to Stilbaai for the weekend for some serious cycling with our friend Braam and back to Cape Town on Sunday.
Hi we were this past easterweekend in the Baviaanskloof on our way back from Port Elizabeth.Would like to know what type of Izuzu you were driving and how was the road?
