The lost forest of loblolly pines in Bastrop County are over 100 miles from their next nearest of kin in East Texas. A great fire in 2011 burned down much of the forest. The surviving population is expected to fail over time and die out. Todays lost pines are more drought tolerant than their cousins to the east, and while the forest borders are receding the interior seems strong and full of life (to this casual observer as of July 2017).
