After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 new tenants mysteriously
moved in and began occupying Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf. Due to
a bitter disagreement between two factions, those that wanted the
harbor seals to go and those that wanted them to stay, a study was
done by the Marine Mammal Center. It was recommended that the
harbor seals permanently be allowed to stay as the area provided a
sanctuary for them close to their food source. Even though viewing
the harbor seals is free they provided a boost to the business' at the
Wharf as they soon became the star attraction attracting more
tourists and locals alike.
