It is believed that approximately 20,000 elephant seals return to the
place of their birth twice each year (not all at one time):
1) pregnant females to give birth mid December to February then mate
with an alpha male about three weeks after giving birth to a pup, and the
second time 2) during the warm summer months to molt and rest.
