National Birds are a source of pride for many countries and territories. Looking at the list, it is easy to see that powerful birds of prey - hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures are a common theme. Others are selected for beautiful song, beauty or because endemic to the country.
Some countries do not have an official or unofficial national bird that I can find. There is no master list - just have to look separately at each country or colony or island. If no official bird - if they appear on coat-of-arms - I will use that bird.
Some are very peculiar as both France and Portugal have the rooster - not a native bird. And Mauritius has the Dodo which has been extinct for almost 4 centuries - but is certainly famous.
I have done photography in just 12 countries, but many countries have the same National Bird, so that I have 83 countries/territories showing here.
Many island nations have an endemic species as their national bird, so until I go there, I will not have a photo. Also several Middle East countries just show 'falcon' as the national bird without saying which species of falcon.
For the USA states and Canadian provinces - see separate listing.
