We are delighted to encounter an old original "milestone" left over from the time that the highway
was a humble country track. I have no idea how old this thing must be but these were a common site
along here when I was a child. For some reason the miles were always expressed in Roman Numerals.
Anyway it tells us that our journey has 30 miles to go. Let me see. If I divide by five and then
multiply by eight I shall have the distance in kilomentres. 48 kilometres then. At the present rate
of travel that is about six or seven stages. The route we will actually be taking is a little more
circuitous than that. Still - we are getting along now. It WAS 112 kilometres at the start.
