Soon we break free of the trees onto well mown recreational parkland and an excellent view of The
Spit. It was said that this section of Middle Harbour was so narrow, one could spit across it.
A two lane bridge was built to span it in 1924 only to be replaced by this four lane version in 1958.
The problem of Sydney's ever increasing traffic, combined with the fact that the bridge
regularly opens for the passage of tall harbour traffic, means that The Spit Bridge is arguably
Sydney's worst transport bottleneck. Replacing this structure with a much longer and much higher
one has been a political log jam for nearly 20 years now.
