In Korea our unit did some volunteer work with a local orphanage and with local rice paddy farmers but I've never seen a military base that promotes volunteerism as effectively as the Defense Language Institute (DLI), Presidio of Monterey, CA. DLI is a conduit for a myriad of worthy and grateful volunteer organizations - from animal lovers working for SPCA, environmentally conscious who clean up the beaches, those who want to help the needy through Houses for Humanity, the sports events such as Big Sur Marathon, golf tournaments, etc. My volunteer work has almost always evolved around Veterans and Laguna Seca Raceway - mostly with the Association of the US Army (AUSA) and the Vietnam Veterans of Monterey County (VVMC). I served as the Chapter President of the General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell Chapter of AUSA for 3-years and as a volunteer for VVMC for over 10-years.
