| I travelled to south-west Kazakhstan in the Province/Region of Atyrau (Atyrau Oblast) from 21-31 May 2017. We flew to Atyrau from Europe via Moscow and spent 10 days birding the Kazakh Steppes located west of the Ural River. The Kazakh Steppes cover a vast land area and are considered as a unique eco-region in the Palearctic, being a pristine ecosystem least affected by anthropogenic activities. This trip was a follow up of my previous trip to Russia in June 2014. Our primary aim here was to observe and photograph species with a restricted breeding range in the Western Palearctic such as Black Larks, White-winged Larks, Sykes's Warblers, etc.. We concentrated our searches towards the west of Inderbor (i.e. west of Ural River), where we found a diversity of habitats ranging from green steppes with scattered bushes, sandy and saline steppes to rather xeric (drier) steppes. We also visited the outskirts of Atyrau City southwards along the Ural River close to the Ural Delta, including a few stops along the Caspian Sea shore.
