Bird trips to Egypt (April-May 2009, January 2012, July 2013, May 2014)

Overall, I travelled to Egypt four times between April 2009 and May 2014. The main purpose of each trip was to see and photograph Western Palearctic bird species, as well as to visit some historic sites. In late April 2009, we started our journey in Cairo with a visit to the pyramids at Giza. Birding around Cairo subsequently included a visit to Abassa area to the north (Zagazig area), and to wadi El Natrum to the west. We then travelled to Suez and the Sinaļ region, with a few days spent around St Catherines' monastry and further south at Sharm El Sheikh. We then drove back to the Nile valley (via Suez and Ain Sukhna) where we visited Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel (Lake Nasser). Back from the Nile Valley, we reached again the Red Sea coast in May and visited several important sites located south of Hurghada: Safaga mangroves, Wadi Gimal, Hamata Mangroves, Wadi Lahami, Bir Shalatein. Three subsequent shorter trips to Egypt were made in January 2012 (5 days), July 2013 (1 week) and May 2014 (3 days) to see and photograph a few particular species that are of very rare occurrence in the Western Palearctic (WP): African Skimmer, Saunders's Tern, Yellow Bittern, African Collared Dove, African Mourning Dove and Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse. In 2012, African skimmers were found along the Nile Valley (Edfu) following a short visit to Abu Simbel to photograph both African Collared and African Mourning Doves. In July 2013, we re-visited the Cairo/Sandafa area to search for the rare Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, followed by a short visit to the Sinai to observe near Ras Sudr the first breeding pairs of Saunders's Terns for the WP. Finally, following the recent discovery of breeding Yellow Bitterns in a few protected mangroves along the Red Sea Coast, we returned there in May 2014 for a very short trip between Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Wadi Lahami in an attempt to find and photograph this species. This gallery has 335 images depicting 64 species.
