NGC2442/2443 (Meathook Galaxy) & NGC 2434

NGC 2442/2443 (near centre of image, commonly known as the Meathook Galaxy or the Cobra and Mouse), is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Volans. The galaxy’s distorted shape is most likely the result of a close encounter with a smaller, unseen galaxy. NGC 2442 is the name for SW part, while NGC 2443 is NE part.

NGC 2434 is an elliptical galaxy also in Volans (upper left in image).

They were both discovered by Sir John Herschel.
