I had a very short downhill stretch, a matter of a few hundred yards, and it was here that I passed a group that had been driven to the top of Haleakala, given heavy-duty and stable bikes, and descended much earlier in the day. Here they'd stopped and were getting ready to ride their van back to Paia.
