My girlfriend, Jewel, and I stayed in a fantastic home on the northwestern slopes of Haleakala. It's the sparsely populated Upcountry part of Maui. The drive down to Paia took about 40 minutes. The location was eye-popping. We had views of other islands in the Hawaiian chain, we were partly in a jungle-like setting, and the area all around us, if it was developed, had a decidedly rural feel.
