Slab City is on the remains of an old military base and is just a little east of Salvation Mountain. Here is where you go to get completely off the grid. Parking is free, but there are no services -- no water, no electricity, no sewage, no trash pickup, no internet. Yet, the community seems nice. I heard that every Saturday they have a talent show. For some interesting YouTube videos, Google 'Slab City'. The residents call it the "last free place in America", and I can totally understand its charm.
