Engineers without Borders

"Felix and his mate": Photographs taken in April, 2005 on photo-safari within the huge 12,000 hectare Kapama Game Preserve, just west of Kruger National Park, South Africa. Named by the Park rangers, Felix reigns over his pride of lionesses, young males, and cubs - about 20-strong in all. Well fed on resident impala antelope, Felix leaves all the hunting duties to his hard-working lionesses. The rangers estimate Felix to be 550 lbs in weight, and are very respectful of his unpredictable mood swings. Co-existing in a free state with the other "Big Five" inhabitants (elephant, rhino, leopard, Cape buffalo), Felix fears nothing but does exercise "bush smarts" in his day-to-day routine. I was pleased to receive a note from a recent Kapama visitor who advised that Felix is "still in charge." -- David Rilstone
