Just underneath, and to the right of, the reduction drive, is the single 2N3904 preamp. The other transistor (to the left of tghe LM386) is also a 2N3904 and is the phase splitter that converts the single-ended output of the 2-diode detector to the differential (balanced) input of the LM386.
