Apologies to everyone who is upset with me using the 'old' name for this species! I do realise the accepted name for these boys there days is either Cinereous or Monk Vulture but I personally don't think those names do these stunning birds justice. So, officially, the name Black Vulture now belongs exclusively to the Nearctic species that we used to call American Black Vulture namely because that bird is actually black. However I grew up during an age where every book I had on Europes birds called this species Black Vulture and that name impressed me enormously. So much so that when my dear wife said we needed a foreign holiday the year after we got married (1986) I engineered that holiday in Majorca / Mallorca in order to see this bird - along with Audouin's Gull of course.
