East Munster and South
Leinster, much of which was to be acquired in time by the Butler family. was such an
area. Theobald Walter. the Butler. ancestor of the earls of Ormond, was initially granted a
large area of northern Tipperary (with some lands in Limerick) in 1185 and the cantred of
Gowran in Kilkenny by Prince John (Gowran he later held of William Marshal).' In 1338.
James Butler was created earl of Ormond and was granted the whole of county Tipperary
as a liberty. During the same time county Kilkenny, which had always been a liberty, was
being broken into smaller estates by the successive inheritance of heiresses. By the end of
the fourteenth century. the Butler family had also managed to acquire much of county
Kilkenny. culminating in the purchase of the Despenser purparty in 1391.

The Butler family muniments. which consist of deeds, rentals and extents for
these areas, were published as the Calendar o(Ormond Deed~·: a central source for
English families in the medieval period. The twelve chosen families held lands in
counties Tipperary or Kilkenny, and feature in the printed volumes one and two ofthe
Ormond Deeds (covering the years 1172 to 1413) with enough entries to make an
assessment viable. Family members though may have acquired land in other counties
which it will be relevant to discuss. The Ormond Deeds are complemented by the Red
Book of' Ormond. a cartulary containing further deeds and rentals of the Butler properties.

Antoine de La Boétie belongs to an old bourgeois family from Sarlat, first called Boyt.

Their name appears in memories of 1204 and 1280 in which we see them involved in quarrels between the abbots of Sarlat, lords of the city, and the bourgeois of Sarlat represented by the consuls. Their name is mentioned in a letter of thanks from the jurade addressed to Pope John XXII after the creation of the bishopric of Sarlat. In 1400, they appear in several receipts of royalties for a house called Petite-Borie-des-Places.

Other titles concern a meadow, called La Poulque, and a land which depended on it. In 1451, Guillaume Boyt († 1467) bought the Clusel mill, on the river Cuze, which was next to it. His son, Raymond Boyt († before 1499), is married to Hélène de Verdon. theDecember 31, 1499, an act is passed between Étienne de Magnanat, parent and guardian of Raymond Boyt's children, and the bishop's representatives concerning the feudal rights to be paid to the bishop. The children of Raymond Boyt of whom Étienne de Magnanat is the tutor are Antoine, Étienne, Guantounet and Iolande. In a deed of sale from20 November 1512, Antoine de La Boithie, is qualified as a bachelor of law. La Boétie's family loved annuities. Antoine de La Boétie considerably increased their number. It was Antoine who first gave his name the form of La Boétie. From the country house that his father had built near the Clusel mill, between 1486 and 1499, called Boyt, Boyte. and in patois, Boytio , Boytia , La Boytia, he called himself Sieur de La Boytie, transformed into Boëtie. In 1529, Antoine de La Boétie qualified himself as Lord of the lair of La Mothe-les-Sarlat. Antoine de La Boétie had, like other of his contemporaries, noble claims by seeking to transform his bourgeois land of La Boétie into a noble lair of La Mothe. Antoine de La Boétie married Philippe de Calvimont, from the Calvimont de l'Herm branch , parish of Tursac. Philip Calvimont had two brothers, one of whom, John Calvimont was advisor to the parliament of Bordeaux , named second president of this Parliament by François I er , and in 1526 its ambassador to Charles Vto negotiate the ransom of his children, another was a priest. From this marriage were born Clémence, Anne and Étienne. Antoine de La Boétie was still alive in 1540 1 although he made his will in 1533. He probably died before 1547, the date generally attributed to the writing by Étienne de La Boétie of the Discours de la servitude voluntary 2 .
