The Roman villa at Stancil was excavated between 1938 and 1939. Rooms containing hypocaust were encountered. 80 undated inhumations were also recovered from the site. Other finds include 3rd century pottery, painted wall plaster, oyster shells and flue tiles. The site of the villa is marked by a scatter of stone and building debris.

Origin of the Stancill (Stancil) name
By Stephen Stancill Mims February 28, 2000 at 04:45:46
I saw some postings bt Kenneth A. Stansell and Lee Fuell regarding the origins of the Stancill name.I only have some knowledge of the Stancill (Stancil) name which is prevalent in the South and particularly the family originating primarily in eastern NC (mostly Pitt County). This branch of the Stancill family descends from John Stancill, who we believe came from England to Virginia in the late 1600's and then later migrated to eastern NC.The name is English, Viking-English I have read) and is indeed listed in the Doomesday Book which suggests that it existed as a place before the Norman Conquest.Stancill still exists as a small town in Yorkshire County, England, not far from Sheffield. In fact some Stancills still live in that area today! The town was built on the ruins of an old Roman bathhouse and may mean "Stone cell" etc.We think that John Stancill's ancestors took the name of this place. Many of the Stancils on this page (one L) may descend from this same John and one of the L's was dropped. There is a branch of the family that moved to California and spell their name Stansell, and any of you out there who live in Mississippi there is a good chance that you descend from another branch of the family that moved to Sunflower Co. in the early 1800's.I don't have my papers with me as I write this, and I am going from memory!I do have some additional information on this family, mostly gleaned from a Stancill Family History written by Hugh Stancill (now deceased) of Mississippi.
