NOTES BY CLIFF BOYT:
Beyond John Boyt (1739) we go back to Bouys, who were Quakers. It is believed that the Bouys became the Boyts in the 1700s.

The story about the Boyt family’s migration to New Zealand is interesting. My grandfather and my two oldest uncles were coal-miners in South Wales. They worked at the Oakdale colliery and lived in Blackwood. When the miner’s strike took place in the 1920s my oldest uncle Reginald decided to “take up the cloth” and attended theological college and trained to be a minister of the Anglican church. When he graduated in 1927 or 28 his first placement was to St George’s church in Frankton, Hamilton, New Zealand. Reginald came to New Zealand with his brother Harold who was “on strike” in 1928. My grandfather died of silicosis early in 1930 and the two boys in New Zealand sponsored the rest of the family to migrate. The rest of the family comprising my grandmother, my dad – Arthur, and Dad’s other siblings – Jack, Beatrice, Grace and Olive arrived in New Zealand late in 1930. My dad, who worked for Liptons grocery store in Blackwood became a grocer, setting up business in Te Awamutu about 1937. My uncle Reginald (Reverend Boyt) suffered from severe silicosis and spent a couple of years in care before passing away around 1940.
