"Goanna" is the term given in Australia to large lizards of the family Varanidae, the monitor lizards (which include the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo "dragon". The lizard you have is a large species of skink, probably a Cunninghams skink, but it is different to the ones I am familiar with in NSW. Where abouts is it photographed?
