I too am searching a line of Gibsons in Washington Co. Ohio. John Gibson of Scotland,married an unknown women in New York state. They had a son George Washington Gibson born about 1816. We know his mother died when he was very small. He was raised in Washington Co. Ohio by Timothy and Elizabeth Hiett. His father John remarried a woman named Ann Poe. They had one child we know of Harriet Gibson born about 1818 in Ohio. George W. married Nancy Travis and had several chidren including my great grandfather Timothy Hiett Gibson. Keep in mind, some historic docs I've read indicate possible the Lenape tribe of which Ann Shikellamy was part had interbred with French Canadian settlers and the tribe was also known to have raised some "white" children as their own tribal members - Therefore DNA is not the final say on historical accuracy and the frontier was not so us/them. Nicholas Gibson has no real historic origins listed prior to about 1780 but their are some apocryphal tales connecting him both to Col John Gibson and another "John" Gibson of unknown origin.

DNA may show you are not related to Ann Shikellamy but are you descended from John Gibson? John Gibson was married more than once.

To the Skidmores and Loughs, you're indeed related by marriage to Nicholas Gibson and his wife Lydia. But, in 4 of my family members, DNA disproves that we are in any way connected to this Col. Gibson nor to his wife Ann Shikellamy. There is a mixture of many family histories in the messages posted on this blog.

Well, this is all well and good, but I see no reason, Deborah to think this is a connectgion to Joseph Fisher Gibson b. 1791 in VA and md to Susannah Moore, living next door to James Moore, Sr. in Hancock Co., TN in 1850.

Col. John Gibson's father was a George Gibson b. 1704, but George's father is not a William Gibson born 1668 in England. You will never find any proof of that because is simply is not true. The reason being that the tree was initially manufactured by Georgene Humphries about 1998. I have her original gedcom file, and have exchanged many email with her before her death. I'm not related, but through my study of local history, I consider Col John Gibson an unsung hero of the west from the waining years of the War for Empire, through the Revolution and into the early 18th century. I have seen the great Chiefs grave at Weiser's and smoked a cigar at the Colonels resting place in Allegheny Cemetery. His grave (John Gibson's) is quite non-descript being only an old stone well Worn and flush with the ground and what appears to be a generic DAR bronze marker also flush with the ground. I had a difficult time finding it. For those of you who are related to this great man, you ghouls be very proud of the contributions he made to "the west" during its formative years.

Hi we are communicating from Essex in England UK. My partner is related to 1704 George Gibson's brother James Gibson 1702 London whose father was William Gibson 1668 London , then his father William 1629 Lanc., John 1595 Lanc, Robert 1567 Lanc. and then Thomas 1540 Lancashire. Now someone in USA has a tree which goes back further from Thomas 1540. This tree shows all his siblings being Scottish and their father being Lord George Gibson 1491 and further back to amazingly about 900. Now our research is questioning the link between Thomas 1540 and then the Scottish ancestry. We would love it to be correct, but we always tread carefully not presuming it is all valid. Would very much like to be in contact with anyone who would like further information on the English Gibson. Particularly William Gibson 1629 who was one of the first Quakers in England. I do family history research for friends and relations paid and unpaid!! Also give talks about it at History Society - really find the whole subject fascinating. I recently became interested in Nicholas Gibson of Randolph Co. WV. One of his descendants through his son Robert did the Y DNA test and matched my cousins who descend from James Gibson who married Rebecca Westfall around 1795. In addition, both lines Y DNA matches that of a descendant of William Gibson, who is mentioned as a guardian of Nicholas (or John) in a court document of 1790. William might be the brother of Nicholas' father John.

I have found Nicholas Gibson's father John to be a road block. My son's paternal line is through John Wilson Gibson, son to Nicholas and Lydia Sink. The same line as Prudence Gibson Lough. According to her bible her Grandfather John was from Scotland. Not the Col Gibson who lost his wife at the Yellow Creek Massacre. Can anyone verify this information? Could you please email me at: juanagibson@juno.com I have some questions about your lineage and have loads of documented information on the early Gibsons out of Jamestown (very Indian and triracially mixed), Joseph Fisher Gibson (Newman's Ridge, TN), and Horsehead Gibson (north tral WV). Much of this has been confirmed with DNA analysis. I am related to these early Jamestown/melungeon Gibsons (Joseph Fisher Gibson) and also to Horsehead, though, not exactly how re Horsehead and I believe his line and my Jamestown line may not be related, at least not recently here in the US. Working on DNA analyses now re Horsehead and my documented family. Oh, and let me add, re your Elijah Frenchman Gibson, was his dad's name Elijah as well with a Cogar mom? Important. My grandfather was Elijah Frenchman Gibson born in Braxton Co WV 1889 died Upshur Co WV 1968. I've traced his roots back as a descendent of Nicholas Gibson and find the possibility of being related to Col John Gibson fascinating! I remember hearing in the pre-internet days 1970's among my Gibson family reunions an oral tradition that we had an ancestor who fought in the Am Revolution and who had a native American wife - This would certainly fit Col John Gibson and the Daughter of Chief Shikellamy - incredible if this is in my bloodline. Wish I had a way to confirm!

Hi everyone, I am at a stuck point in my research for my Gibson side: My G,G,G,G Grandfather is Nicholas Frances Gibson, born around 1796 in Albemarle County, Va. I know this much: his wife was Elizabeth Bowen, and in 1830 I have him in Harrison, W.Va , area and then in 1838 he was assigned Postmaster of Flatwoods, Braxton Co. W.Va.(Braxton become a Co. in 1836), he then moved to Bath County, Va. His son is Tazewell M. Gibson, my direct line. My problem is, I don't know his father and the line connection, but I think the Nicholas Gibson, 1765-1858 as a connection,, I believe this Nicholas was the son of John Jacob Gibson. Does anyone have clues for me?

My husband is a descendent of the Hatfield's (as in the Hatfield's and Mcoys) In doing genealogy research on the Hatfield clan, discovered that George Goff Hatfield was married to a woman reputed to be Martha "Marthy"Shikallamy Shikellamy Logan of Cayuga tribe. First hand account of Shickellamy's death indicates that "one of his daughters--Ann--was with him at his time of death so it appears certain Ann was not his only daughter so it is certainly possible that the Hatfield family legend of Marthy being Shikellamy's daughter is true. If anyone finds any additional evidence of Shikellamy having more then one daughter or having a daughter named Margaret or Marthy who married George Goff Hatfield and moving to Lee County, Virgina, I would love to know.

Also served as Sheriff of Lewis and Braxton Counties in West Virginia. Before going west
as did several families as settlers to a new frontier.

Chapter III. Indian Traders

Col. John Gibson removed to the Forks of the Ohio before the Revolutionary war. He was an Indian fighter as well as an Indian trader. He was born in Lancaster borough. It has been said that it was to him that the chief Logan delivered his famous speech on the murder of his relatives. Gibson and Logan were intimate and warm friends. He had great influence with the Indians, but knew how to punish them when they misbehaved. Col. Gibson's field of operations during the Revolutionary war was with the Western army.

Col. George Gibson, brother of John, was also born in Lancaster, and became an Indian trader and fighter. He married a daughter of Francis West, and settled at Shearman's Creek, in Perry County. He commanded a regiment during the Revolutionary war, and was in a number of battles. He was killed at "St. Clair's defeat." He was the father of John Bannister Gibson, chief justice of the State.


Chapter XXIX. City of Lancaster

As has been shown, Hamilton laid out the first and central portion of the town in 1730. Settlements had been made here in 1721 or 1722, and by 1730 the little cluster of houses is said to have attained a population of two hundred souls. The locality was known as the Indian Field and Gibson's Pasture. George Gibson kept a tavern here when Hamilton platted the town, and had probably been located for several years. His tavern was called "the Hickory Tree," probably from a tall hickory which stood near the public road, and which was said to have been a favorite one with the Indians, the place of their rendezvous for many years, and the centre of one of their small villages. "A swamp lay in front of Gibson's," we are told, "and another to the north." The one in front of Gibson's, nearly in the centre of the site of the present city, was the Dark Hazel Swamp, which was drained and cleared of wood in 1745. The other was the Long Swamp, extending beyond the limits of the town-plat toward the northeast. Gibson's tavern is supposed to have stood about where the Slaymaker Hotel now does. His pasture, afterwards Sanderson's pasture, was rented by Mr. Hamilton about 1748, to Adam Reigart. The same year that the town was laid out, Stephen Atkinson, says Rupp, built a fulling-mill at great expense, but the inhabitants of the upper part of the creek assembled and pulled down the dam on the Conestoga, as it prevented them from rafting and getting their usual supply of fish.


Chapter XXIX. City of Lancaster

George Gibson was a resident of the settlement before the town was laid out, and owned property on Prince Street. His son, Gen. John Gibson, was born here May 23, 1740. His career in connection with the French and Revolutionary wars is well known, and to him, it is said, the celebrated speech of Logan was delivered.

The first record we have of a tavern within the bounds of Lancaster City is the statement by Rupp that one was kept by Gibson as early as 1722, at the sign of "The Hickory-Tree." It was situated on the old road from Philadelphia to Wright's Ferry, which was on the original plot of the town, called, as it now is, King Street. The site was for many years occupied by Slaymaker's Hotel, later by Benjamin Champney's residence, and is now covered by the building in which is High & Martin's crockery-store.

I happened upon this website as I was looking for images and info on my ancestors, and I'd like to share what I've learned. Chief Shickellamy had a daughter Ann. Before her death at the Yellow Creek Massacre, she married Col. John Gibson and had three sons, including Nicholas. I have some interesting information about both John and Nicholas. John was a colonel in the Revolutionary War and was at Valley Forge under General Washington. He also held several important political positions during his life. Nicholas was captured by Native Americans as a child and lived with them for several years before being able to return to life with the settlers.
Also, I have information about the lineage of the Gibsons before John. John was the son of George Gibson, born 1704 in Stweartstown, Ulster, Ireland. His father was William Gibson II, born 1668 in London. William Gibson I was born 1629 in Caton, Lancashire, England. William Gibson I was son of John Gibson, born 17 Oct 1595 in Caton. John's father was Robert Gibson, born 1567 in Caton. Robert was son of Thomas Gibson, born 1540 in Lancashire.
I find all of this interesting, so I decided to share.
