Michele and I took David Crockett's first rifle, now known as "Betsy" (from the old TV show and movies), to Crockett State Park for the annual birthday celebration. The rifle normally resides at the East Tennessee Historical Society. This is the original rifle, not a reproduction, which Crockett sold to raise money for buying a horse he needed to visit Polly Finley, his future wife. Joe Swann and his brothers, descendants of a family who have owned the rifle for 200 years, have Betsy on permanent loan to the Society. She is our most important artifact. This (2011) was the best celbration to date. Re-enactors brought color and ceremony to the occasion; the weather was perfect.
