Fort Osage

Fort Osage was built under the direction of William Clark, joint commander of the William and Clark expedition, as part of the federally controlled fur trade system. Captain Ele B. Clemson soldiers erected the Fort in 1808 to serve several purposes. First and foremost, it functioned as an outpost in the newly aquired Louisiana Purchase, housing soldiers to guard the new territory and to protect the United States Factory Trade house there.
