White-throated Magpie-Jay, Calocitta formosa is a large Central American jay species. It ranges in Pacific-slope thornforest from Jalisco, Mexico to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The spanish word for Magpie is Urraca.

These remarkable birds lived in the tree-shaded coffee plantation behind my home outside of Managua in 1991-92. They looked and sounded like extreme versions of North American Blue Jays. Their behavior was intelligent and curious. Thanks for posting these beautiful photos that display so much of their personalities.
