Built without mortar, there are many of these old stone walls spread all around the old Whitney Park. Some stone walls (in Europe) built in this fashion have stood for over 100 years.
Whitney Park was a Summer home for the Whitney family; they were relatives to the Vanderbilts of shipping and railroad reknown. They had more than one Summer 'Camp' throughout the U.S.A.; this one had over 15,000 acres and had a staff in the many dozens, including craftsmen, loggers, servants and, at one time, maple sugar makers.
At one time thay also had a factory which produced vast amounts of charcoal, which was shipped out to the rest of the world via railroad. They owned their own private railroad stations, which were strictly off-limits to the common folk.
