Carter Dome 9Jan2020

Chilly day for a hike but it was great to see the sun and blue skies!! Stayed in the single digits all day with a wind chill that had to be below zero. This was my 12th time on Carter Dome so finished this peak for the grid!!! There was several inches of fresh powder down low to about 8 inches up high with drifts over my knees from all the wind. Lower trail was broken out but I still put snowshoes on in the parking lot because I didn't want to freeze my fingers changing gear. Once I passed the junction with the Carter Dome trail the soft snow definitely increased. 3 people in front of me helped break trail then they split off and went to Mt. Hight so I had fun breaking about a half mile of really deep snow above Zeta Pass. 3 barebooters came from behind and finally passed me so they got to finish breaking trail but with no snowshoes it still left me a lot of work to do. I don't want to rant but I just don't understand how people can go up a mountain when there is that much snow and not bring snowshoes. Anyway, good day and glad it was only the 10 miles with 3370 ft of ascent. Next month I finish the Carters for the last time!
