Composites are among the most successful flowering plants. Looking close at the blossom, one can see it is not one flower but many.
Each petal has a flower at its base, known as a ray flower. The composite's head is comprised of hundreds of tiny flowers called disk flowers.
That is why there are so many fuzzy "parachutes" when a dandelion goes to seed.
