A male Allen's hummingbird perches on a twig. They summer along California's coastal region.
Their colors are similar to the Rufous hummingbird of the Northwest, with the exception of their green back.
Allen's are smaller than our local Anna's and considerably more "lens" shy, so getting close to them is a rare opportunity.
Like all hummers they have beautiful iridescent gorgets and feathers. By fall the Allen's will fly south to Mexico for the winter.
