Gus' Dewlap

Grand Teton National Park, WY

Gus' dewlap (or bell) has a distinctive fork at its tip. The function of dewlaps are unclear. One suggests they serve to spread a scent from urine during the mating season. Another suggests they are used as visual indicators for cows to determine which males are best for mating. I remember being told the dewlap functioned to channel water down the neck. Also called a bell, it seems that the longer extension (or clapper) eventually freezes off on older bulls leaving the remaining round flap. What ever function it serves it is an interesting appendage.
