These ant-like insects are actually wasps. The males are wasp-like and winged, while females are wingless. A velvet-like pubescence covering the upper surface of the body insulates the wasp from the summer heat. The velvet ants are active diurnal (day-time) predators that feed upon a variety of dune invertebrates.
