Teddy-bear Cactus (Cylindropuntia bigelovii)

Borrego Valley

The jumping cholla is characterized by its distinctly erect trunk, short branches and numerous spines. The stems are much larger in diameter than the silver cholla. The easily detached stems (hence the common name) fall to the ground where they root and produce new plants. The common name of teddy bear cactus is derived from the dark-brown trunk and the numerous brown spines present. The new growth is usually much paler in color, affording a striking contrast to the brown color below. This yellow flowering cactus is found at lower elevations in rocky or gravelly soil.

Note the density of the spines. This serves not only to prevent browsing, but also affectively put the plant stem into the shade.
