Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens)

Coyote Canyon, Borrego

The ocotillo is one of the most striking and unusual desert shrubs found in dry rocky areas. Numerous spiny stems, often reaching a length of 20 feet, bear red flowers at their tips. Small green leaves are produced if adequate moisture is available. Ocotillos are often called drought deciduous plants because they lose their leaves if available moisture suddenly decreases
