Tarantula Hawk (Pepsis mildei)

Oak Canyon Trail, Mission Trails view map

A predatory wasp where the female wasps looks for a large tarantula spider, which it stings thus paralyzing the spider. This allows the spider to stay alive while serving as a feast for hatching larval wasps. The wasps are feeding on Milkweed.
