Coralline Algae (bossiella sp.)

Point Loma

Many forms of red algae are common to the tidepool environment. One common type is the thickly branced coralline (Bossiella) which is usually colored a reddish-pink, but often appears a bleached white when it dies. This algal type is heavily calcified, stiffly jointed, and contains water-soluble pigments. This coralline forms dense mats in exposed pools and rocky flats.
