Rockweed (Pelvetia fastigiata)

Point Loma

Rockweed is a very common brown algae that is often used as an index organism for the upper tidal zone. Its distribution starts at the middle of the upper tidal zone and extends to about the beginning of the mid-tide zone. These flat, brown, multi-branching plants which drape over the rocks at low tide furnish many microhabitats for a wide variety of other rocky shore organisms.
