This modest tomb, which stands facing the sea on the peninsula of Grand Bé in Saint-Malo , is that of one of the greatest French-language writers of all time.
François René de Chateaubriand born in 1768 in Saint-Malo and died in 1848 in Paris, was a minister of state, ambassador of France to the United Kingdom, to the Vatican and to Sweden, he was a privileged witness of all the great events of the history of France and Europe between 1789 and 1830: the French Revolution, the Terror, the Napoleonic adventure, the Restoration (Louis XVIII, Charles X) the Revolution of 1830.
His great book: "Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe" (" Memoirs from Beyond the Grave") contains a fascinating account of these major events and the role he himself sometimes played in them.
Special note for my North American friends:
In 1791, fleeing from France where he was considered a counter-revolutionary and risking the guillotine as such, he left Saint-Malo and went to Newfoundland. From there he travelled through Canada and the United States and lived great adventures related in «Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe».
So much better viewed in original size.
