Duccio di Buoninsegna est le plus grand peintre siennois du Trecento. Sa renommée est telle et la Maesta, avant même d’être achevée ,bénéficie d’une telle renommée qu’en juin 1311 lors de son transport de l’atelier du peintre à la cathédrale où elle doit être exposée, toute la ville se réunit, forme un cortège pour accompagner l’oeuvre. Duccio di Buoninsegna is the greatest Sienese painter of the Trecento. Its fame is such, and the Maesta, even before it was completed, enjoys such a reputation that in June 1311, when it was transported from the painter’s studio to the cathedral where it was to be exhibited, the whole city came together and formed a procession to accompany the work.
