La petite île de Gavrinis est située dans la partie centrale du golfe du Morbihan. « Mor Bihan » signifie « Petite Mer » en breton. Le golfe, véritable mer intérieure (20 km de long sur15 km de large), contient 48 iles dont 24 sont habitées.

Gavrinis est couronnée par un cairn d’où la vue s’étant sur tout le golfe ce qui explique le choix du lieu pour y bâtir la tombe d’un grand personnage. De là, même après sa mort, il pourrait surveiller son territoire et ses sujets.
A l'époque de la construction du cairn (entre 4250 et 4000 ans avant J.-C), l'île était encore rattachée au continent.
