Galungan and Kuningan. 1/9.

Ubud.

Every 210 days (duration of the Balinese lunar year), the most important holiday of the calendar returns: Galungan.
Three days during which they celebrate the creation of the universe, the victory of good over evil and they pray for the victory of virtue (Dharma) over the devil (Adharma). The Balinese think that those days the gods and the spirit of their ancestors come down to earth.
Two days before Galungan, the Balinese made decorations that adorned streets and houses. On the sidewalks are erected large bamboo poles called Penjor. They are decorated with palm leaves, a coconut and cupcakes. Their curved shape symbolizes dragons supposed to look after the community.
In the houses cakes are prepared for the offerings, and in the courtyards the pig is killed to prepare festive dishes that will be shared by the whole family. All the parents scattered around the island converge towards the family home.

Ten days after Galungan, it is the Kuningan festival, which lasts only one day. The gods and the spirit of the ancestors return to heaven. Last moments deprived of communion before the following year.
