A Lady From Cornouaille. (Coiffe de l'Aven).

La confection de la collerette d’un costume de l’Aven (bas gauche de l'image) demande minutie et patience. Pour faire court : elle est réalisée avec 500 pailles appelées «fétuques des prés». Ces graminées sont lavées, bouillies à l’eau vinaigrée avant de sécher deux ans. La pièce de coton de 2 à 2,5 mètres est enduite d’un mélange d’amidon de blé, de maïs et de paraffine. L’on pose une fétuque sur le dessus de la pièce de coton, une fétuque dessous et ainsi de suite. Le repassage au fer traditionnel est tout un art car il doit courber et non écraser la collerette...

Making the collar of a Aven’s costume (Low left side of the picture) demand patience and care. To make a long story short : It is made with 500 straws called "fescue pastures." These grasses are washed, boiled in vinegar water before drying two years. The cotton piece from 2 to 2.5 m is coated with a mixture of wheat starch, maize and paraffin. One fescue is placed on top of the piece of cotton, a fescue below and so on... Ironing with atraditional iron is an art because it has to bend and not crush the collar...
