The name «bishnoï» comes from «Bis Nau» (twenty-nine) referring to the number of principles taught by their spiritual guide, Jambha, who lived in XV century.
The Bishnoïs are vegetarian and should not drink alcohol or smoke. They have a deep respect for their environment and protect trees as well as «black bucks», a kind of antelope living numeroulsly all around their villages.
