Rome and Tuscany Aug 2007

Since we had never birded Italy before, we were not familiar with the birds, except for studying them beforehand. So, please give input for those I have not identified and if I have misidentified any.

Incredible picture of the Kingfisher...we know how shy they can be. We have spent a lot of time in the U.K. and also on the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean, though it has been a while. Here are a few thoughts.
The gull does look like a Herring-type. Med. gulls are more along the lines of a Black-headed and only a bit larger than they are, the wings tend to be broader and rounder in general shape. The Bee-eaters are gorgeous birds. Obviously they eat bees as well as wasps which they catch and then beat against a branch to remove the stings before they swallow them. The swallows are Barn Swallows but are just called The Swallow in Europe (like The Robin) and yes, we believe that is an immature Blackbird. We really think that could be a Stock Dove (pale rump and what looks like it might be the shiny green patch on the neck) If you have other pictures you might try to see if it has a black eye (white in the Wood P.- visible in your Wood P. photo) If it flew and had white through the wings I guess it would have to be a Wood P.
It is nice that you had good birding there. The word used to be that Italy had trapped and eaten most of its migrant birds and was not a great place to birdwatch. I know that efforts to stop the killing have been made by brave crusaders.
