I had one lone female painted bunting sampling all my feeders and watering bowls for two days last week in DeSoto (south Dallas County). I never saw a male (rats!) or any other female and it appears she's moved on as I haven't caught sight her in several days. She is a beauty but I sooo want to see the male!

Sitting on the patio in my backyard (which is becoming a desert) in Austin, I just saw one of these at my birdbath. I had no idea what it was, and used Google to search for "Austin blue red yellow bird" and this page came up at the top of the list.

I spotted one of these guys briefly, near a pond in Centerville. I have been here for five years, and this is the first one I have ever seen (and he didn't stay long!). Found your site trying to identify him.

I was looking out my kitchen window and spotted a pair of the buntings, very beautiful male. I live on west end of Elmo Lake, just east of Terrell. My daughter saw another male while walking her dog, about a quarter mile west of my house.

I live on a small ranch 10 miles southeast of Kerrville, Texas. For the past 2 weeks a beautiful pair and one apparently stray male have been visiting my back deck, the males sitting near and attacking their own reflections in my windows. I have lived here for 20 years and this is the only time I have seen these beautiful birds. I have bird seed out all year so that I can enjoy them. Can you tell me what I can do to attract them? Will they use a nesting box? 05-31-10

Just saw one wrestling over my feeder with a cardinal. Beautiful! We live in Driftwood, just south of Austin. I've fed the birds for years, but this is the first time I've seen one of these!
Guest 20-Apr-2010 22:28
I saw one today... absolutely vibrant cobalt blue head, bright red breast, and cadium yellow back! Every bit living up to it's name! I had never seen one before; this is my second year of feeding the wild birds so maybe I am on their 'list' now... :) I love the cardinals but they did not invoke the wow that I whispered at the sight of this magnificent little beauty!

I am between Houston and Austin.

I hope he/she does hang around! :)
Guest 20-Apr-2010 14:39
We forgot to mention when we posted seeing two painted buntings yesterday that we live in San Marcos which is very close to Kyle, Texas. We are anxious to see if they return today.

We just saw two of these spectacular birds today, one was larger than the other but looked just alike. We are wondering if the males and females look alike? We have bird feeders by our dining room windows and the two birds came at different times. We are hoping they come back and stay and make this their home. We also got pictures of one of them and have already printed them. It is 6:30 pm and they are still feeding. They are truly the most beautiful birds we have ever seen.
Paul K 07-Feb-2010 21:06
Just saw one of these on our feeder in Beaumont, TX. Never saw one before and fortunately I got a couple of good photos from inside the house and was able to identify it on your site. It is a beautiful bird and I too hope it comes back.

I saw a flash of red flying into my yard and I thought it was a finch. Then it landed in our birdbath and I thought it was a bluebird. Then I saw the yellow and green and I said "Oh my god, what kind of bird is that?" My wife said she saw one just like it last year. I immediately looked it up on your website. It is a painted bunting and it is the most beautiful bird that I have every seen. He didn't stay long and he flew away. We hope he comes back. We live in Kyle TX, just south of Austin. We love watching birds and butterlies.
