Olive Sparrow

Texas

I couldn’t resist this little Olive Sparrow that was constantly darting around at the edge of the brush at the Salineno Wildlife Refuge during a visit to the Lower Rio Grande Valley just before Christmas. I wanted to get a low angle to hide the pile of corn and birdseed that the sparrow was standing on and it really felt like the bird wanted to make a game out of it. I tried laying on the ground after seeing him out feeding nearby. Of course, when I did, he didn’t come out of the dense brush. When I would get up and sit in the chair he would immediately dart back out and start eating. I know it was a funny sight because I got several comments from the other guests. This went on a few times before I eventually decided to just set my camera on the ground and shoot from a seated position without actually looking through the viewfinder. It took me a bunch of tries but I finally caught him! I guess this one fell in the category of “can’t let it go.”
