There is something especially exciting about seeing a large group of birds behaving in unison. Last week I had an opportunity to watch a huge flock of American Avocets feeding at Bolivar Flats and it was almost mesmerizing as the black and white patterns moved past each other. It’s something I could watch for hours and not get bored. Like so many things, however, the opportunity only lasts for a brief time and almost before I knew it the avocets were flying to a much more distant location to feed and the experience was over. It was a lesson to make the most out of an opportunity because they don’t usually last long and there is no telling when they might return.
