I don’t think I have ever met anyone who didn’t get excited about seeing kingfishers, I’m not sure what it is about them but their widespread appeal is undeniable. For this reason, I never pass up an opportunity to look for them when I am out birding. This tiny American Pygmy Kingfisher was a cool customer during a boat ride in the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge in northern Costa Rica. Our captain was able to ease the boat in for frame-filling photos and if that skill wasn’t impressive enough, the bird was still standing confidently on its perch when we pulled away. I almost wanted to go back and check the stick for glue LOL.
